The [Ontario Progressive Conservative Party](/source/Ontario_Progressive_Conservative_Party), led by [John Robarts](/source/John_Robarts), won an eighth consecutive term in office, and maintained its majority in the legislature despite losing eight seats from its result in the [previous election](/source/1963_Ontario_general_election).

The [Ontario Liberal Party](/source/Ontario_Liberal_Party), led by [Robert Nixon](/source/Robert_Nixon_(politician)), increased its caucus from 24 to 28 members, and continued in the role of [official opposition](/source/Official_opposition). [T. Patrick Reid](/source/T._Patrick_Reid) of [Rainy River](/source/Rainy_River%2C_Ontario) was elected as a [Liberal-Labour](/source/Liberal-Labour_(Canada)) MPP. He replaced [Robert Gibson](/source/Robert_Gibson_(Canadian_politician)), the late MPP for [Kenora](/source/Kenora_(federal_electoral_district)) as the legislature's sole Liberal-Labour MPP.

The [social democratic](/source/Social_democratic) [Ontario New Democratic Party](/source/Ontario_New_Democratic_Party), led by [Donald C. MacDonald](/source/Donald_C._MacDonald), increased its caucus in the legislature from 7 members to 20.
