Italian racing event

The Ferrari 250 GTO #128 of Nicolosi/[Zanardelli](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ferruccio_Zanardelli&action=edit&redlink=1) pursued by the Porsche 904/8 #186 of Barth/Maglioli. They ended 13th and 6th, respectively

The **[48° Targa Florio](/source/Targa_Florio)** took place on 26 April 1964, on the [Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie](/source/Madonie), [Sicily](/source/Sicily) ([Italy](/source/Italy)). [Porsche](/source/Porsche) took the overall victory.[1]

## Race

The event was marked by the absence of [Scuderia Ferrari](/source/Scuderia_Ferrari): [FIA](/source/FIA) refused to [homologate](/source/Homologation_(motorsport)) the brand new [250 LM](/source/Ferrari_250_LM) as a GT-class racer, and Ferrari boycotted the race in protest. The Ferraris that took part in the race were all driven by [privateers](/source/Privateer_(motorsport)).[1] The prototype-class [Porsche 718 RS Spyder](/source/Porsche_718) driven by [Jo Bonnier](/source/Jo_Bonnier) and [Graham Hill](/source/Graham_Hill) took the lead, but had to retire during the second lap. Then the leading [Porsche 904/8](/source/Porsche_904#904/8) of [Edgar Barth](/source/Edgar_Barth) and [Umberto Maglioli](/source/Umberto_Maglioli) suffered some time-wasting issue and was overtaken by the [Ferrari 250 GTO '64](/source/Ferrari_250_GTO) of [Carlo Facetti](/source/Carlo_Facetti) and [Jean Guichet](/source/Jean_Guichet), which had to retire during lap 6 for [gearbox](/source/Gearbox) issues.[1] The [Shelby Cobra](/source/Shelby_Cobra)'s debut at the Targa Florio was disappointing as they soon proved too heavy and unwieldy for the narrow and twisty track. In the end, the podium went to 3 GT-class, with Porsche scoring a double victory with the [904 GTS](/source/Porsche_904_GTS) of Antonio Pucci/Colin Davis and Gianni Balzarini/Herbert Linge, respectively.[1]
