The **1953 NBA draft** was the seventh annual [draft](/source/NBA_draft) of the [National Basketball Association](/source/National_Basketball_Association) (NBA). The draft was held on April 24, 1953, before the [1953–54 season](/source/1953%E2%80%9354_NBA_season). In this [draft](/source/Draft_(sports)), nine remaining NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. [college basketball](/source/College_basketball) players. In each round, the teams select in reverse order of their win–loss record in the [previous season](/source/1952%E2%80%9353_NBA_season). The draft consisted of 19 rounds comprising 122 players selected.

## Draft selections and draftee career notes

[Ray Felix](/source/Ray_Felix) from [Long Island University](/source/Long_Island_University) was selected [first overall](/source/List_of_first_overall_NBA_draft_picks) by the [Baltimore Bullets](/source/Baltimore_Bullets_(1944%E2%80%931954)) and went on to win the [Rookie of the Year Award](/source/NBA_Rookie_of_the_Year_Award) in his first season.[2] [Ernie Beck](/source/Ernie_Beck) and [Walter Dukes](/source/Walter_Dukes) were selected before the draft as [Philadelphia Warriors](/source/Philadelphia_Warriors)' and [New York Knicks](/source/New_York_Knicks)' [territorial picks](/source/NBA_territorial_pick) respectively. Three players from this draft, [Bob Houbregs](/source/Bob_Houbregs), [Frank Ramsey](/source/Frank_Ramsey_(basketball)) and [Cliff Hagan](/source/Cliff_Hagan), have been inducted to the [Basketball Hall of Fame](/source/Basketball_Hall_of_Fame).[3]
