The **1950 PGA Championship** was the 32nd [PGA Championship](/source/PGA_Championship), held June 21–27 at [Scioto Country Club](/source/Scioto_Country_Club) in [Upper Arlington, Ohio](/source/Upper_Arlington%2C_Ohio), a suburb northwest of [Columbus](/source/Columbus%2C_Ohio). [Chandler Harper](/source/Chandler_Harper) won the [match play](/source/Match_play) championship, 4 and 3 over [Henry Williams, Jr.](/source/Henry_Williams%2C_Jr.) in the Tuesday final;[3] the winner's share was [$](/source/United_States_dollar)3,500 and the runner-up's was $1,500.[4] It was Harper's only [major](/source/Men's_major_golf_championships) title; his next best finish in a major was a tie for eighth at the [Masters](/source/Masters_Tournament) in [1947](/source/1947_Masters_Tournament).

Defending champion [Sam Snead](/source/Sam_Snead) won $250 as the medalist in the stroke play qualifier at 140 (−4),[5] but lost in the second round.[6] He regained the title, his third, in [1951](/source/1951_PGA_Championship) at age 39.

The last three majors were held within several weeks in 1950. The [U.S. Open](/source/1950_U.S._Open_(golf)) was concluded less than two weeks earlier near [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia) where [Ben Hogan](/source/Ben_Hogan) defeated [Lloyd Mangrum](/source/Lloyd_Mangrum) and [George Fazio](/source/George_Fazio) in an 18-hole playoff on Sunday, June 11. The [British Open](/source/1950_Open_Championship) was played the first week of July in [Scotland](/source/Scotland).

## Format

The [match play](/source/Match_play) format at the PGA Championship in 1950 called for 12 rounds (216 holes) in seven days:[2]

- Wednesday and Thursday – 36-hole [stroke play](/source/Stroke_play) qualifier, 18 holes per day; - defending champion [Sam Snead](/source/Sam_Snead) and top 63 professionals advanced to match play

- Friday – first two rounds, 18 holes each

- Saturday – third round – 36 holes

- Sunday – quarterfinals – 36 holes

- Monday – semifinals – 36 holes

- Tuesday – final – 36 holes
