[Jim Ferrier](/source/Jim_Ferrier) won the [match play](/source/Match_play) championship, 2 and 1 over [Chick Harbert](/source/Chick_Harbert) in the Tuesday final; the winner's share was [$](/source/United_States_dollar)3,500 and the runner-up's was $1,500.[4] The match was tied after the first round,[5] and again after 22 holes. Ferrier won the next three and local resident Harbert could get no closer than two holes down for the rest of the match.[6] It was the only [major](/source/Men's_major_golf_championships) title for Ferrier, a [naturalized](/source/Citizenship_of_the_United_States#Naturalized_citizenship) U.S. citizen born in [Australia](/source/Australia). ## Tournament summary Defending champion [Ben Hogan](/source/Ben_Hogan) was defeated 3 and 1 in the first round by [Toney Penna](/source/Toney_Penna), who was seven-under for the 17 holes, but then lost in the next round.[7][8] [Jimmy Demaret](/source/Jimmy_Demaret) earned $250 as the medalist in the stroke play qualifier at 137 (−7),[9] but was also eliminated in the first round. [Sam Snead](/source/Sam_Snead) lost in the second round to three-time champion [Gene Sarazen](/source/Gene_Sarazen).[8] Hogan regained the title the [next year](/source/1948_PGA_Championship). The last three [majors](/source/Men's_major_golf_championships) were held within several weeks in 1947: the [U.S. Open](/source/1947_U.S._Open_(golf)) was concluded several days earlier in [St. Louis](/source/St._Louis), [Missouri](/source/Missouri). [Lew Worsham](/source/Lew_Worsham) defeated [Sam Snead](/source/Sam_Snead) by a stroke in an 18-hole playoff on Sunday, June 15.
