The **1922 PGA Championship** was the fifth [PGA Championship](/source/PGA_Championship), held August 14–18 at [Oakmont Country Club](/source/Oakmont_Country_Club) in [Oakmont, Pennsylvania](/source/Oakmont%2C_Pennsylvania), a suburb northeast of [Pittsburgh](/source/Pittsburgh). The [match play](/source/Match_play) field of 64 competitors qualified by sectional tournaments.[2] This was the first PGA Championship with a field of 64 in the bracket; the previous four had fields of 32 players. In the Friday final, [Gene Sarazen](/source/Gene_Sarazen) defeated [Emmet French](/source/Emmet_French), 4 and 3.[3]

Sarazen, age 20, also won the [U.S. Open](/source/1922_U.S._Open_(golf)) a month earlier near [Chicago](/source/Chicago). [Defending champion](/source/1921_PGA_Championship) [Walter Hagen](/source/Walter_Hagen) did not enter this year due to exhibition engagements; the two champions met the [following year](/source/1923_PGA_Championship) in the finals, won by Sarazen.

This was the first of thirteen major championships at Oakmont; three PGA Championships and ten [U.S. Opens](/source/U.S._Open_(golf)) through [2025](/source/2025_U.S._Open_(golf)). It has hosted the [U.S. Amateur](/source/U.S._Amateur) six times and the [U.S. Women's Open](/source/U.S._Women's_Open) twice. The PGA Championship returned in [1951](/source/1951_PGA_Championship) and [1978](/source/1978_PGA_Championship).

Sarazen was the first of four players in history to win the [U.S. Open](/source/U.S._Open_(golf)) and the PGA Championship in the same calendar year. He was followed by [Ben Hogan](/source/Ben_Hogan) in [1948](/source/1948_PGA_Championship) and [Jack Nicklaus](/source/Jack_Nicklaus) in [1980](/source/1980_PGA_Championship). Through [2012](/source/2012_PGA_Championship), [Tiger Woods](/source/Tiger_Woods) is the last to win both, in [2000](/source/2000_PGA_Championship), part of his *[Tiger Slam](/source/Tiger_Slam)* of four consecutive majors.
