The **18th Genie Awards** were held on 14 December 1997 to honour Canadian films released that year.[1] to honour the best [Canadian films of 1997](/source/List_of_Canadian_films_of_1997).[1][2] The ceremony's hosts were film critics [Geoff Pevere](/source/Geoff_Pevere) and [Cameron Bailey](/source/Cameron_Bailey).

For this year, [CBC Television](/source/CBC_Television) declined to broadcast the ceremony; in recent years, the academy's experimentation with formats had not been successful. The CBC did, however, commit to the popular one-hour Preview show. [Bravo!](/source/CTV_Drama_Channel) immediately agreed to air the entire ceremony, but not live--the show was aired the following day. In support, [CTV](/source/Canadian_Television_Network), [Global](/source/Global_Television_Network), [The Movie Network](/source/Crave_(TV_network)) and [Super Écran](/source/Super_%C3%89cran) also provided awards-related programming.[3]

This year's awards were dominated by [Atom Egoyan](/source/Atom_Egoyan)'s *[The Sweet Hereafter](/source/The_Sweet_Hereafter_(film))*, [Thom Fitzgerald](/source/Thom_Fitzgerald)'s *[The Hanging Garden](/source/The_Hanging_Garden_(film))*, [Gabriel Pelletier](/source/Gabriel_Pelletier)'s *[Karmina](/source/Karmina_(film))*, [André Forcier](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Forcier)'s *[The Countess of Baton Rouge](/source/The_Countess_of_Baton_Rouge) (La Comtesse de Bâton Rouge)* and, from [Lynne Stopkewich](/source/Lynne_Stopkewich), *[Kissed](/source/Kissed)*. Two Special Awards were given: one for Outstanding Achievement in Make-up, to [Pierre Saindon](/source/Pierre_Saindon) for his work on *[Karmina](/source/Karmina_(film))*; the other to [Telefilm Canada](/source/Telefilm_Canada) for its development and support of the Canadian film industry.[3]
