The **14th Genie Awards** were held on December 12, 1993 to honour Canadian films released that year.[1] This year's event was dominated by two [Vancouver](/source/Vancouver) productions: [Paul Shapiro](/source/Paul_Shapiro_(director))'s *[The Lotus Eaters](/source/The_Lotus_Eaters_(film))*, and [Sandy Wilson](/source/Sandy_Wilson_(director))'s *[Harmony Cats](/source/Harmony_Cats)*.

In a bid to increase the visibility of the Genie Awards in the [francophone](/source/French-speaking_Quebecer) market in [Quebec](/source/Quebec), the ceremony was held in [Montreal](/source/Montreal) and conducted in [French](/source/French_language) for the first time.[2] It was hosted by [Marc Labrèche](/source/Marc_Labr%C3%A8che), one of Quebec's most popular comedians. As it had in 1992, the academy produced a special that aired immediately after the main broadcast and presented viewers with film clips and winner and nominee interviews. This year, it included satellite hookups between the gala in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, and the languages had changed places: the main broadcast was in French, and the post-ceremony show, *Genies Tonight Wrap Party*, was in English.[3][2]

Also new this year was the introduction of the [Claude Jutra Award](/source/Claude_Jutra_Award), which recognized outstanding achievement for a first-time director.[4] This award is still presented at the contemporary [Canadian Screen Awards](/source/Canadian_Screen_Awards) as the [John Dunning Best First Feature Award](/source/John_Dunning_Best_First_Feature_Award).[4]
