**13 Comae Berenices** is a [binary star](/source/Binary_star)[3] system in the northern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Coma Berenices](/source/Coma_Berenices). It has an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 5.2, which is bright enough to be faintly visible to the [naked eye](/source/Naked_eye). With an annual [parallax shift](/source/Stellar_parallax) of 11.1 [mas](/source/Milliarcsecond),[1] it is located around 293 [light years](/source/Light_year) from the Sun. It is member of the nearby [Coma Star Cluster](/source/Coma_Star_Cluster) (Melotte 111).[11]

The two stars of this system orbit with a period of 27.25 years and a large [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.868.[6] The primary is an [A-type main-sequence star](/source/A-type_main-sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of A3 V.[3] In 1965, Gerhard Jackisch discovered the star is a [variable star](/source/Variable_star).[12] It was given its [variable star designation](/source/Variable_star_designation), GN Comae Berenices, in 1975.[13] It is catalogued as an [Alpha2 Canum Venaticorum variable](/source/Alpha2_Canum_Venaticorum_variable).[14] Rensom (1990) listed it as a suspected [Am star](/source/Am_star).[15] The system is a source of [X-ray emission](/source/X-ray_astronomy), which may be coming from the companion.[16]
