'''11714 Mikebrown''', provisional designation ''{{mp|1998 HQ|51}}'', is a stony background [asteroid](/source/asteroid) from the central region of the [asteroid belt](/source/asteroid_belt), approximately {{convert|4.5|km|mi|abbr=off|sp=us}} in diameter. It was discovered on 28 April 1998, by astronomers of the ''Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search'' ([LONEOS](/source/Lowell_Observatory_Near-Earth-Object_Search)) at the U.S. [Anderson Mesa Station](/source/Anderson_Mesa_Station) near Flagstaff, Arizona, and later named after American astronomer [Michael Brown](/source/Michael_E._Brown).<ref name="springer" /><ref name="MPC-Mikebrown" />

== Orbit and classification ==
[[File:Mikebrown-2010Jan.gif|200px|thumb|left|In January 2010, ''Mikebrown'' came to [opposition](/source/Opposition_(planets)) with [Mercury](/source/Mercury_(planet)), [Earth](/source/Earth), and [Mars](/source/Mars).]]

''Mikebrown'' is a non-[family](/source/Asteroid_family) asteroid from the main belt's [background population](/source/Background_asteroid). It orbits the Sun in the [central](/source/Kirkwood_gap) main-belt at a distance of 2.0–3.4 [AU](/source/Astronomical_unit) once every 4 years and 4 months (1,596 days). Its orbit has an [eccentricity](/source/orbital_eccentricity) of 0.26 and an [inclination](/source/orbital_inclination) of 3[°](/source/Degree_(angle)) with respect to the [ecliptic](/source/ecliptic).<ref name="jpldata" />

On 15 May 2012, ''Mikebrown'' came within about 14.8 [Gm](/source/Gigametre) (0.099 [AU](/source/Astronomical_unit)) of asteroid [625 Xenia](/source/625%26nbsp%3BXenia).<ref name="Mikebrown" />

It was first observed as ''{{mp|1977 RX|8}}'' [Palomar Observatory](/source/Palomar_Observatory) in 1977, extending the body's [observation arc](/source/observation_arc) by 21 years prior to its official discovery observation at Anderson Mesa.<ref name="MPC-Mikebrown" />

== Naming ==

This [minor planet](/source/minor_planet) was named after American astronomer [Michael E. Brown](/source/Michael_E._Brown) (born 1965), a professor of astronomy at [Caltech](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology) in California, and best known for his discoveries of [trans-Neptunian object](/source/trans-Neptunian_object)s, in particular the dwarf planet [136199 Eris](/source/136199_Eris). The official naming citation was published on 24 July 2002 ({{small|[M.P.C.](/source/Minor_Planet_Circulars) {{MoMP|11714|46104}}}}).<ref name="MPC-Circulars-Archive" />

== Physical characteristics ==

According to the survey carried out by NASA's [Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer](/source/Wide-field_Infrared_Survey_Explorer) with its subsequent [NEOWISE](/source/NEOWISE) mission, ''Mikebrown'' measures 4.451 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an [albedo](/source/astronomical_albedo) of 0.246, which is typical for stony [S-type asteroid](/source/S-type_asteroid)s.<ref name="Masiero-2011" />

It has an [absolute magnitude](/source/absolute_magnitude) of 14.1.<ref name="jpldata" /> As of 2017, no rotational [lightcurve](/source/lightcurve) of ''Mikebrown'' has been obtained from photometric observations, and the body's [rotation period](/source/rotation_period) and shape remains unknown.<ref name="jpldata" /><ref name="lcdb" />
