It was discovered on 9 August 1996, by Slovak astronomers [Adrián Galád](/source/Adri%C3%A1n_Gal%C3%A1d) and [Dušan Kalmančok](/source/Du%C5%A1an_Kalman%C4%8Dok) at the [Modra Observatory](/source/Modra_Observatory) in Slovakia, and named for the town [Modra](/source/Modra) where the discovering observatory is located.<ref name="springer" /><ref name="MPC-Modra" />

== Classification and orbit ==
Modra is a member of the [Flora family](/source/Flora_family), one of the largest families of [stony asteroids](/source/S-type_asteroid). It orbits the Sun in the [inner](/source/Kirkwood_gap) main-belt at a distance of 2.1–2.5&nbsp;[AU](/source/Astronomical_unit) once every 3 years and 6 months (1,286 days). Its orbit has an [eccentricity](/source/orbital_eccentricity) of 0.08 and an [inclination](/source/orbital_inclination) of 3[°](/source/Degree_(angle)) with respect to the [ecliptic](/source/ecliptic).<ref name="jpldata" /> A first [precovery](/source/precovery) was taken at ESO's [La Silla Observatory](/source/La_Silla_Observatory) in 1991, extending the asteroid's [observation arc](/source/observation_arc) by 5 years prior to its discovery.<ref name="MPC-Modra" />

== Rotation period ==
In September 2010, a photometric [lightcurve](/source/lightcurve) analysis of Modra by American astronomer [Brian Warner](/source/Brian_D._Warner) at his Palmer Divide Observatory, Colorado, rendered an unambiguous [period](/source/rotation_period) of {{val|27.12|0.02}} hours with a brightness variation of 0.53 in [magnitude](/source/Magnitude_(astronomy)) ({{small|[U=3](/source/LCDB_quality_code)}}).<ref name="Warner-2011i" /> A second lightcurve obtained during the wide-field survey at the U.S. [Palomar Transient Factory](/source/Palomar_Transient_Factory) in August 2010, and gave a period of {{val|27.1481|0.0409}} hours with an amplitude of 0.42 ({{small|[U=2](/source/LCDB_quality_code)}}).<ref name="Waszczak-2016" />

== Diameter and albedo ==
According to the survey carried out by NASA's [Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer](/source/Wide-field_Infrared_Survey_Explorer) and its subsequent [NEOWISE](/source/NEOWISE) mission, the asteroid has a low [albedo](/source/astronomical_albedo) of 0.05.<ref name="Masiero-2012" /> In agreement, the large-scale survey by [Pan-STARRS](/source/Pan-STARRS) (PS1) rates it as a dark [carbonaceous](/source/C-type_asteroid) body.<ref name="Veres-2015" /> However, the ''Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link'' (CALL) assumes a much higher albedo of 0.24 – derived from [8&nbsp;Flora](/source/8%26nbsp%3BFlora), the orbital family's largest member and namesake – and groups it to the [S-type asteroid](/source/S-type_asteroid).<ref name="lcdb" /> The different albedos of the two [spectral classes](/source/Asteroid_spectral_types) also translate into divergent estimates for the body's diameter. While CALL calculates 3.7 kilometers, NASA's space-based survey inferred a much larger diameter of 8.7 kilometers.<ref name="lcdb" /><ref name="Masiero-2012" />
