Locomotive wheel arrangement

Under the [Whyte notation](/source/Whyte_notation) for the classification of [steam locomotives](/source/Steam_locomotive), **0-2-4** represents the [wheel arrangement](/source/Wheel_arrangement) of no [leading wheels](/source/Leading_wheel), two powered [driving wheels](/source/Driving_wheel) on one axle, and four [trailing wheels](/source/Trailing_wheel) on two axles.

## History

Dundee and Newtyle Railway 0-2-4

This is an unusual wheel arrangement, with the only known examples being [three locomotives](/source/Earl_of_Airlie_(locomotive)) supplied to the [4 ft 6 in](/source/4_ft_6_in_gauge_railway) (1,372 mm) [Dundee and Newtyle Railway](/source/Dundee_and_Newtyle_Railway) by [J and C Carmichael](/source/J_and_C_Carmichael) of Dundee in 1833.[1][2] These were still in operation in 1847, but may have been scrapped in 1849 when the line was converted to [standard gauge](/source/Standard_gauge).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

There was also the [Bristol and Exeter Railway Fairfield steam carriage](/source/Bristol_and_Exeter_Railway_Fairfield_steam_carriage), built in 1848 for the Bristol and Exter Railway, who used it on a [branch line](/source/Branch_line) before turning it into an [0-2-2](/source/0-2-2) by removing its coach section and two of its trailing wheels, after which it was promptly used for shunting duties.
